Also known as Wolf3D, it is widely regarded as having helped popularize the first-person shooter genre on PC and is id's precursor to the wildly popular Doom series. It follows the mission of a World War II Allied spy, William "B.J." Blazkowicz, to take down Hitler's Nazi regime. Wolfenstein 3D is a classic game that defined first person shooters of the 90’s. I thought the gameplay was kind of ridiculous as I watched him play over at his house. So instead of shooting Nazis, you would be shooting Ken and Ryu. I remember my friend had, I think, a hack version where the game was Wolfenstein 3D but the enemies were Street Fighter characters. I accepted the violence as I thought PC games were geared toward adult audiences. Walking around the hallways also gave a sense of eeriness. After shooting a Nazi, blood sprayed from his body as he twists and falls to the ground. A skeleton hanging from the ceiling was a bit disturbing. I remember these elements frightened me back in the early 90’s. These were some graphic violence back then and may not have been suitable for younger players. The levels get progressively more difficult the further along you get in those episodes. Take them out immediately, but sometimes they can get annoying because they’ll be waiting for you around the corner.Īfter the main menu, you can choose which episode to play. Normally, there would be a guard as you enter the door leading to the room with supplies. Along the way there are food and ammo lying on the ground to help the player stay alive. The gameplay is pretty straight-forward, shoot anything that moves and find the switch to exit the level.

This was an amazing game because the player can obtain 3 types of weapons throughout the game, collect ammo, walk around shooting Nazis, and find treasures. Wolfenstein 3D was developed by ID and was my first experience playing a first person shooter game. Back in the old days when our family had a 486 33 MHZ computer, first person shooter games weren’t prevalent as they are today.
